Chiropractic in the Super Bowl

Written by

An online post on January 30, 2015 from the group Circle of Docs titled “Chiropractic in the Super Bowl” describes how not only are chiropractors part of the health care staff of the two Super Bowl contenders but that all 32 NFL teams offer players and personnel chiropractic services as part of the team to manage and prevent injuries. According to the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, “this distinction is a benchmark for the profession and documents the important role that chiropractic care plays in optimizing athletic performance.”

The article states that Dr. Ramogida of the Seattle Seahawks was originally supposed to stay with the team for a couple of years but the players asked that he stay with them because they liked getting adjusted on game days, that was over 12 years ago.

Dr. Miller, who has been with the New England Patriots for over 25 years is present during mini-camps, training camp, preseason games, regular-season games (both home and away), and postseason games.

In fact the NFL has just released a statement advocating for all NFL teams as now employing a Chiropractor as part of their medical staff.

Chiropractic the fastest growing career for the next 5-6 years.

In an article titled “What It Takes to Get One of the Most In-Demand Jobs” posted online November 5, 2014 in the Hutchinson, Kansas-hutchnews.com, it quotes the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Handbook that says “it expects chiropractic employment to rise 28 percent through 2020- much faster than the average for all jobs.”

The article discusses the high cost of a college degree and the sense of urgency in choosing a career that might be in demand in the future. It also goes on to describe the rigorous and intensive educational requirements that an applicant must go through to become a chiropractor, which are among the most stringent of all health care professionals including medical doctors.

As more and more people today are turning to non-invasive, drug-free relief for various conditions such as neck/back pain and migraine headaches and at the same time trying to have a healthier lifestyle, chiropractors are the natural choice to be the first contact for these patients.

Chiropractic care may ease back-related leg pain

Written by

Chiropractic care may ease back-related leg pain

For those of your suffering from low back and leg pain a new study from the online version of the Annals of Internal Medicine, 2014 Sep. 16;161(6):381-91. doi: 10.7326/M14-0006 offers more proof that a visit to a chiropractor should be the first choice.

Gert Bronfort, the study’s lead investigator said that about four out of five people will develop low back pain during their lifetime, and up to 40 percent of them will develop back-related leg pain. This is a serious health and economic problem in this country since patients with back-related leg pain, such as sciatica, are usually treated with prescription medications, injections and surgery.

The study showed people with leg pain related to back problems had more short-term relief if they received chiropractic care along with exercise and advice, rather than exercise and advice alone.

The patients were asked to rate their pain at the beginning of the study, after the 12 weeks of treatments and again at the end of the year.

At 12 weeks, 37 percent of the spinal manipulation group felt their pain was reduced by at least three-quarters, compared to 19 percent of those who received exercise and advice only.

In addition, the patients who had spinal manipulation had higher scores for overall improvement and satisfaction.

By the one-year follow-up, the no-manipulation group had caught up, and there was no longer a significant difference in pain relief. But the scores for overall improvement and satisfaction remained higher for the patients who received spinal manipulative therapy.

The need for more studies especially ones that involve continued chiropractic manipulation after the reduction of the acute pain episode is evident. But for right now make sure that you find a chiropractor who not only utilizes spinal manipulation/adjustments but advises you in exercise and activities of daily living strategies to be done at home.

Debunking the stroke myth

Written by

“Neck manipulation may be associated with stroke,” so read the news release on August 7, 2014 from the American Heart Association.  Here we go again another blatant attack on the chiropractic profession that is not based on facts or statistics.  In a great response written by Michael Noonan, DC in the Bangor Daily News on August 16, 2014, he releases his own “scientific statement”: If you suffer from neck pain and/or headache, call a doctor of chiropractic first.  We are trained to evaluate patients for VBA stroke and other serious conditions.  The treatments we provide are not only very effective, they are literally thousands of times safer than the drugs prescribed by medical providers.

Dr. Noonan describes the rare type of stroke that involves the vertebra-basilar arteries, or VBA, which course along the back of the neck to the brain.  If the arteries get damaged they can cause an interference to the blood supply to the brain, eventually leading to a stroke.  This type of stroke typically takes time, from a few weeks to more.  What typically happens is the person begins to complain of neck pain and headaches, and seeks the service of a chiropractor or medical doctor.  This is before the blood supply to the brain is even affected.

A large study done in Ontario, looking to see if chiropractic care was the cause of VBA strokes concluded the manipulation blamed by the medical associations for causing these strokes, seems not to be a factor.  As a matter of fact only 4 percent of the people who had a stroke had visited a chiropractor in the previous month compared to 51 percent who had had a stroke who visited a medical doctor in that same time period.  The bottom line is that the patients called the doctor's offices because they were having neck pain or headaches caused by the arterial damage.

Statistically speaking the risk of problems from chiropractic treatment for neck pain is drastically less than the complications and risks associated with the medications (NSAIDs and opioids) that are prescribed for this condition by the medical community.

As a matter of fact as most chiropractors find out that their patients able to greatly reduce or eliminate the use of these drugs after a course of chiropractic care.

How not to use social media

Written by

Here's what not to do with your social media marketing! In an online edition of Runner's World published June 27, 2014, an article titled “Former Marathon Director Sentenced for Insurance Fraud,” describes how Dr. Lawrence Herman filed a false claim for injuries sustained in an auto accident.

Dr. Herman provided evidence that his injuries were sustained on August 16, 2011 when he was involved in a car accident. He then provided records that claimed he was treated by another chiropractor at a clinic that he owned. The total amount of the claim was $17,527 which was initially denied by his carrier USAA. When USAA failed to pay the amount Dr. Herman than hired an Baltimore area law firm which then demanded $60,000 from USAA for reimbursement of his chiropractic treatment expenses and for pain and suffering.

But a funny thing happened on the way- Dr. Herman was able to compete in five different marathons in 2011-2012. All of this information was posted on his Marathon Maniacs page on Facebook. This was an easy one for the Harrisburg Office of the FBI when the began their investigation of the case. Dr. Herman later admitted that the treatments and records were false and were created , at his direction, by a chiropractor who worked for him in his Waynesboro office. He even went so far as to create a fictitious business letterhead to prevent USAA from finding out that the chiropractor was his employee.

Dr. Herman will serve five months in prison plus an additional five months of home confinement for filing the false auto accident injury claim with the insurance company.

ACA aggressively pushes non-discrimination law

Written by

An article in Chiroeco.com on June 11, 2014, tiltled “ACA presses HHS to aggressively enforce provider non-discrimination law,” describes the continuing battle that the chiropractic profession has to wage to make sure that all patients have access to the provider of their choice under the intent of Congress when they passed they Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Some states have used the flawed and ambiguous information in the Frequently Asked Questions on Section 2706 as a way to limit patient access to qualified health care providers, including chiropractic physicians, based solely on the type of license that have.

The Senate Committee on Appropriations stated “the goal of this provision is to ensure that patients have the right to access covered healthcare services from the full range of providers licensed and certified in their state” and have supported a revision of the FAQ on Section 2706.

According to the American Chiropractic Association they fell that changes will be taken to “clarify” and/or replace the flawed FAQ language by the end of this year. Until that happens they will remain vigilante and continue to campaign to ensure the correct implementation of Section 2706

Minnesota Governor Signs Recodification Confirming Chiropractic Scope of Practice, says MCA, was the headline in a press release on the Digital Journal dated May 28, 2014.

While this might not seem as big news in chiropractic- it is! Any time a state validates chiropractic scope of practice is a win for the profession. Minnesota's governor Mark Dayton recently signed the recodification confirming Minnesota's Chiropractic Scope of Practice.

The scope of practice was first enacted in 1919 and has undergone changes in 1927 and 1975 to keep up with the advances in knowledge, technology and education as well as practice changes. These changes have the effect of adding clarity to the current law allowing fairness in enforcement and allows the public and doctors of chiropractic to better understand the professional requirements of a practicing chiropractor.

The signing of the recodification did not come easily. It met with strong opposition and due to the hard work of the Minnesota Chiropractic Association the governor signed it. Dr. Kollar, president of the MCA, went on to reassure residents of Minnesota that the governor's decision will only enhance the quality of care in the state. "Residents of Minnesota can be assured that Minnesota chiropractors are providing quality health care and are doing so with patient safety in mind," he said. "Doctors of chiropractic have had rigorous training and clinical experience to perform the procedures for which they are licensed and take great care to only perform those procedures that are within their scope of practice and expertise."

Chiropractic: Safer Pregnancy and Birthing

A recent article in the Jamaica Observer in the May 25 issue titled “Safer pregnancy, birthing through chiropractic care,” highlighted a increase in the number of pregnant women who are looking for a safer, more natural and easier birthing process.  The article goes on to describe what happens to the woman’s body structurally and hormonally throughout the pregnancy.

These changes include increases in weight, which shift her center of gravity outward and forward.  When this is added to the laxity of ligaments, due to the release of relaxin and elastin, needed for the birthing process it tends to destabilize posture and realign the carriage of weight and forces throughout the joints of the body.  This can lead to misalignment in the spine and pelvis or subluxations causing low back pain.

The author goes on to explain how a condition called intrauterine constraint can be effected by spinal and pelvic misalignment.  The mother’s pelvic anatomy and the relationship between its biomechanics and the baby's positioning can be affected adversely.  If the pelvis is supported symmetrically it allows the baby optimal room for movement and the opportunity to develop free of constraint.

On the other hand if the pelvis is out of alignment it can create an uneven pulling effect on the uterine ligaments limiting the space available for the baby to develop.  This can lead to development problems in the baby's musculoskeletal system.  Fetal positioning is important for delivery without outside intervention.  The optimal positioning is rear-facing, head down.  When the baby presents breech or posterior, it often is the result of an imbalance in the mother's pelvis.

If the mother's biomechanics are not working properly then obstetric interventions are more likely to be recommended and implemented.  The problem is that each and every intervention has significant side effects for both mother and baby.  Fortunately, today more and more parents are becoming aware of the detrimental effects of these interventions and are choosing safer alternatives including chiropractic to address both the needs of the mother and the newborn.
