In a recent research paper published in spine, the authors tested to see how a new traumatic event effects people who have had a prior fusion. Assessing and treating the traumatically injured is an important and complex specialty. In this study it was shown that people with a prior surgical fusion that are injured in a new accident will be more symptomatic and have greater injury than those patients without surgical fusion. In simpler terms, the fusion allows you to be hurt with less trauma than would be required in a healthy spine.
